Sean McGraw MA LPC

Hello! I'm a psychotherapist, musician, and writer.

My Approach

Before we get to my approach, let’s address the elephant in the room. The idea of opening up to a complete stranger with your deepest thoughts, feelings, and emotions can be overwhelming, challenging, and just plain weird. Luckily, therapy has a pretty good reputation when it comes to long-term sustained change. Science even says so! If this is our first time meeting, therapy usually begins by us meeting weekly until we understand your needs, and desired outcomes. From there we may continue weekly, drop down to biweekly, monthly, or as needed, depending on where you are in your therapy journey. Sound cool? Okay, keep reading.

I primarily work with adolescents and adults. I am particularly interested in mood disorders, anxiety, relational issues, complex trauma, adult ADHD, and those who are trying to figure out who the hell they are! I have found people who find me tend to be progressive in their thinking, innovative, and questioning of the status quo.

Given the sheer complexity and diversity that lies within each person, it would be a shame to consider using one approach for every client, not everyone likes vanilla ice cream. I strive to focus on the therapeutic relationship as the relationship between the therapist and client has been shown to be the most important factor in determining the client's success. I can list off a bunch of techniques, but that would be boring. I use a variety of techniques from multiple theories, as long as they are evidence-based and — legit! They include; Gestalt, Existentialism, CBT, ACT, and person-centered. You can expect a warm and validating environment filled with honesty, humor, bluntness when necessary, exploration, creativity, and genuineness.

I've worked with people from all kinds of racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, and thoroughly enjoy doing so.

Services & Fees

I conduct my sessions in-person in Southfield and via telehealth. Sessions are 50-55 minutes and currently $150 per session. I also accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Care Network, United, and Priority.

Reduced fee is determined on a case by case basis. Please contact me if you would like to discuss a reduced rate.

Resume

I decided to become a therapist after years of working in jobs I found unfulfilling and uninspiring. I have spent time in retail, marketing, carpentry, office administration, and non-profit work. So yes, I have some experience. This led to heavy self-exploration to find where I would happily fit in the working world. As it turns out, being a therapist aligns perfectly with my personality type.

I have worked with a variety of populations, such as adults with persistent and severe mental illness, teenagers, college counseling, LGBTQIA+, and seniors. I now primarily work with young professionals, creatives, entrepreneurs, and those who have “strayed” away from a traditional life.

If this sounds like you and you feel we may be a good fit for each other, please reach out!
